Is the America Express Bluebird Prepaid Debit Card worth it? In this post, we tell you why we think the Bluebird Card is indeed the best alternative to checking account on the market. When the Bluebird Card came out, it was promoting features that are usually NOT associated with a prepaid debit card. You could even pick up a set up packet at Walmart for $5 and you could start using your temporary card right away, with many great features, even before your permanent card arrives in the mail. See the video below for how that works and why we like the idea.
As you can see, there is a lot packed into this card. At first, it was too good to be true. But then we went ahead and signed up for our own card. That’s when we came to the realization (and conclusion) that the Bluebird card wants to be different and it is different from the rest. Here are the features we like best.
No Monthly Fee
This is a very big deal. The Bluebird Card has been in existence for a few years now and American Express has kept to their promise. There is no monthly fee and overdraft fees, which is a source of frustration for other prepaid debit card holders.
Direct Deposit and Check Writing
Not only can you direct deposit your paycheck or government benefit/Tax refunds to your Bluebird card but there is no fee. In addition, you can write checks with your deposit card, which makes it very convenient for people who do not have bank accounts but need to write checks for whatever reason. Yes, the card comes with free online bill pay but the ability to write checks is a big advantage over other prepaid cards on the market. See the video below for how the check writing process works (to help you avoid overdrawing the account, which is a good thing)
Robust Mobile Application
The Bluebird Mobile Application (Bluebird app) is very convenient and easy to use. You can track and manage your account online, add checks to your account using your camera phone, add funds from your bank account with ease and pay your bills using the phone app, send and receive money from anyone with a Bluebird account and check your account balance.
There are over 25,000 MoneyPass ATMs that are free for Bluebird cardholders, including those located in Walmart stores. This is a great benefit since ATM fees is also one of the big sources of irritation for other prepaid card holders. Having the ability to get cash without having to pay a fee gives the card a great feature that traditional bank accounts enjoys, and makes it attractive to the unbanked who are tired of check cashing places.
For these three reasons, we think the Bluebird Prepaid card is the best prepaid card on the market and Consumer Reports agrees that it is a smart way to pay.
